Conditioning of converter slag by injection of quartz sand

Producing steel in a converter results in large quantities of slag. Due to their high proportion of free lime and magnesium oxide, converter slags are not volume stable.

When materials containing SiO2, such as quartz sand, used foundry sand or crushed glass, are injected, the content of free lime and magnesium oxide can be selectively reduced to < 0.1%. Slag conditioned in this way is a valuable basic material for road building.

Having built the world's first industrial plant, thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions possesses the requisite plant engineering and metallurgical know-how for the specifically-directed reduction of free lime and magnesium oxide contents in converter slags.
