Crushers are machines which are in operation to reduce large rocks into smaller rocks, gravel, sand. They are predominantly used for the production of crushed mineral materials from stones.
thyssenkrupp is able to offer you a broad selection of different crushers from gyratory crushers and jaw crushers to cone crushers with the most advanced technology in the market - tailored to your demands and sustainable operations.
What are crushers?
Crushers have come a long way historically. Today they are foremost known in an industrial context, for example in the mining industry where they are functioning as highly developed machines that are able to break raw materials into smaller pieces of different sizes by using mechanical power.
However, crushers have been around for centuries. The earliest crushing devices known are stones that people hit against stone anvils in order to enhance their muscle power. For instance, this principle was applied to the preparation of food or the crafting of tools.

From muscle power to the thyssenkrupp Gyratory Crusher Pro
On an industrial scale the for a long the principle stayed the same: muscle power was the dominant force for crushing. For example, in bulk mining where workers used hand and hammers for crushing.
It took until the 19th century that the first mechanical crushers were developed. From then on a continuous process of innovations and developments began which subsequently lead from the cumbersome efforts of individuals using their muscle power to machines such as our thyssenkrupp Gyratory Crusher Pro that is able to generate throughput rates of up to 15,000 t/h.
Fields of application for crushers
With the evolution of crushing technology, the fields of application expanded.
Today, crushers are typically in operation for:
Production of sand, gravel, chippings and crushed stone in quarries and gravel pits
Processing of ores, salts, coal, minerals in mines
Coal preparation in power plants
Processing of solids in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry
Cement industry
Food industry
Recycling industry
Processing of secondary building materials, e.g. concrete recycling
Within the different areas of applications, it may be necessary to conduct several crushing stages to obtain the end product desired.
Crushing Stages
Crushing Stages
The several crushing stages are typically categorized as primary, secondary (intermediate) and tertiary (fine) crushing.
The categorization is based on the degree of material reduction. Depending on how fine the desired end product is to be, the individual steps are necessary. If only larger fragments are to be produced, a primary crusher is necessary and sufficient. However, if these chunks are to be further processed into finer grain, further crushing stages and other crusher types will be necessary.
thyssenkrupp crusher types
thyssenkrupp Mining Technologies offers crushers for all crushing stages. Our crushers are able to handle the whole variety of materials whether large or small, hard or soft, sticky or dry.
We build on the best technology in the market and decades-long experience. With thyssenkrupp crushers you benefit from high performance along with sustainable and economical operations thanks to low-wear design and durable components.
Our huge installed base of crushers around the globe in all climate zones and with different site characteristics are testimony to our determination to deliver the best solution tailored to your demands.
Our crushing equipment
Apart from their suitability for different stages, crushers can also be classified according to their working principle. There are compressive crushers that apply force on the material until it breaks and impact crushers which are utilizing rapid impacts to crush.
At thyssenkrupp Mining Technologies we offer you the best compressive crushers in the market:
Gyratory Crushers
Gyratory Crushers
Gyratory Crushers are commonly used in primary crushing applications and are able to process large rocks for mining ore, overburden or hard rock.
This even more applies for our thyssenkrupp Gyratory Crusher Pro which has the highest capacity available in the market and is able to generate throughput rates of up to 15,000 t/h
Jaw Crushers
Jaw Crushers
Usually used in primary crushing, Jaw Crushers reduce larger and harder materials into smaller and better manageable fragments.
Jaw Crushers consist of two jaws which compress the material they are fed with into smaller pieces.
thyssenkrupp Mining Technology offers Single Toggle and Double Toggle Jaw Crushers which differ in the location of their eccentric shaft and the type of movement of the loose jaw.
Depending on the field of operation one or the other version is better suited. While the single toggle jaw crusher is used for most of the applications, the double toggle jaw crusher is only used in very special hard rock requirements.
Eccentric Roll Crusher (ERC®)
Eccentric Roll Crusher (ERC®)
The Eccentric Roll Crusher is our innovative and unique machine for primary crushing.
It can be described as a combination of a Jaw Crusher and a Roll Crusher. With its particularly flat and robust design it is able to process high throughputs of up to 8,000 metric tons per hour.
The ERC® also has an integrated screen that screens out fine material even before crushing and thus ensures less wear in the crushing chamber.
Cone Crushers
Cone Crushers
The working principle of a Cone Crusher is similar to that of a Gyratory Crusher, however, it is usually in use for secondary and tertiary crushing of granite, basalt, gneiss and other hard rock, as well as in the mining and cement industries.
Such as a Jaw Crusher it works on the basis of compression and squeezes the material until it breaks apart. High cubicity can be achieved with Cone Crushers, which is important for meeting product standards required for concrete aggregate and other products.
Our kubria® series of Cone Crushers offers extremely competitive machines for coarse, medium and fine crushing to the aggregate industry.
Double Roll Crushers & Double RollSizers
Double Roll Crushers & Double RollSizers
Roll Crushers & RollSizers are used throughout all crushing stages. They can handle the medium-hard rock as well as sticky and soft materials, for example lignite and mineral coal, clay, marl, limestone and similar raw materials as well as softer overburden and ores.
As the name suggests, the material will be crushed by compression between two rolls. Whereas hard to crush material will be reduced by additional shear- and tensile forces generated by high rotor torques.
thyssenkrupp Mining Technologies offers two types of Roll Crushers: Double Roll Crushers and Double RollSizers. While in principle the same, they vary in size and rotation speed.
Double RollSizers are basically available in two designs. For primary and secondary applications, crushing takes place between the crushing rolls; if a finer product is required, crushing takes place between the crushing roll and the housing wall.
The Double Roll Crusher has larger roll diameters and runs considerably faster. It also takes its crushing energy from the high moment of inertia. The comminution is mainly done by compression between the crushing rolls.
How to select the right crusher?
How to select the right crusher?
No two plants are alike, and each mine or site has different requirements for a crusher. Combine this with all the variation in crusher types, fields of application as well as the specifications of the three crushing stages it is not an easy task to determine how to select the right crusher for specific operations.
And if that wasn't enough, there is also the option of using crushers for mobile and semi-mobile plants instead of stationary ones.
But of course, there are ways to identify the right crusher for your operations.
In the decision several key questions should be answered
In general, primary crushing in mining is best conducted with gyratory crushers, jaw crushers or the eccentric roll crusher whereas the later crushing stages are the operation areas of cone crushers.
Of course, our thyssenkrupp Crusher experts will happily help you to define the best crusher solution for your operations.
With our decades-long expertise and references from around the globe we are able to analyze your demands and help you in making the right crusher decision
